2024 Off To Southern Africa

  Another 5:30 wake-up call, a hearty breakfast including bacon and eggs, juice and coffee, and off we go on another adventure. This is sold as a “full day” game drive. Onboard our jeeps by 6:00, home by 2:30. This is designed to give us access to areas of the park that are further away from our lodge than we could do in just the normal couple of hours. It paid off for us big time. We’ve been trying to catch up with the elusive lions of Chobe, so finding them this morning was a big deal. We found moms, cubs, and male lions, both older and younger.  Along the way, we got a pretty good layout of that part of the “BOOSH”. Starting with the lowest part, the Chobe (CHO-bee) River Plain, a vast expanse of flatness that extends as far as the eye can see, and is typically covered by several feet of water this time of year, to the rising scrubland that climbs over at least several miles, to the forest/jungle at the summit. We’ve arrived at Baobab (BOW-bob) Camp in Botswana as of Monday afternoon, so it’s our fourth country and another whole new world. Amazingly, we have some limited service here, so I hope to catch up with some of my other pages.  We flew back to Livingstone from Kafue this morning, then took about three hours to drive here, including going thru customs at the border.  Interestingly, that border crossing area is similar to the Four Corners area in the southwest. Only here, it’s four countries that all meet at the same spot: Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Although we are not scheduled to cross into Namibia, we can easily see it from our campsite, which is right on the border. My front porch overlooks the plains and Namibia.
