A Look Back

All of us have returned safely to our homes in the States, and are settling back into our “real lives” for better or worse, but we have a group thread on WhatsApp that will allow us to keep in touch as long as we like.

It was a great trip, making 14 new friends and learning how fortunate we are to have the lives that we have.

A visit to southern Africa is definitely recommended, and if you like being with an organized group,
I don't think anybody is better at these trips than Overseas Adventure Travel* (https://www.oattravel.com). We could not have asked for a better group leader than Sanction Joao. What a great guy who knows everyone, everywhere, laughs constantly, especially at himself, but is very organized and serious when it is needed.

It might be a difficult trip for you if you are not very mobile. Climbing in and out of the safari vehicles several times daily can be a bit challenging with the risk of a fall. And if you're not good with warm/hot temperatures, be sure to go during the cooler times of the year. March into April IS NOT cooler.

The African people are friendly everywhere, the camp staffs are very welcoming, and the exchange rate is very favorable at this point. I'm aware of the recent incident where a lady was killed when an elephant rolled over a jeep at Lufupa Camp, but honestly, there was never a time when we didn't feel totally safe in our jeeps with our guides.

Only a couple of days left to finalize packing and then it's off to southern Africa. My flights will be on United from Phoenix to Newark (5 hours) then (another 16 hours) on to Johannesburg ("JoBerg" or "Jozi") and then the reverse route home but from Cape Town. I'm traveling with a group of 14 people from Overseas Adventure Travel , and OAT pretty much takes care of everything. No vaccinations were required for this trip, but malaria pills are recommended. Many of the camps where we will stay will be "tented camps." The itinerary and lodging is as follows: 2 nights in Johannesburg, South Africa (including an elephant walk ) 3 nights at Karongwe Private Game Reserve  in search of the "Big Five," at Shidulii Lodge in eastern South Africa.   (The "Big Five" are Lion, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Rhino, and Leopard.) Chobe NP, Botswana

We’ve arrived at Baobab (BOW-bob) Camp in Botswana as of Monday afternoon, so it’s our fourth country and another whole new world. Amazingly, we have some limited service here, so I hope to catch up with some of my other pages.  We flew back to Livingstone from Kafue this morning, then took about three hours to drive here, including going thru customs at the border.  Interestingly, that border crossing area is similar to the Four Corners area in the southwest. Only here, it’s four countries that all meet at the same spot: Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Although we are not scheduled to cross into Namibia, we can easily see it from our campsite, which is right on the border. My front porch overlooks the plains and Namibia. Kafue NP, Zambia

  Malachite Kingfisher We arrived here by small plane from Livingstone, Zambia, a flight of about ninety minutes after driving from Zimbabwe. What a great location at the confluence of two rivers! Lufupa Safari Camp is an oasis in the middle of nowhere. Though the game drives have had very limited success, the place is beautiful, and people here, as always, make you feel welcome and safe.  My tent/cabin overlooking the river   The main lounge/eating area.  But when we arrived back at camp last night from our evening game drive, there was a hippo waiting to meet us, right in the middle of everything. Because they can be very dangerous, we kept our distance, of course.  We had a very nice Sunday. Two boat rides, one on the Lufupa River in the morning, and a sunset “booze cruise” on the Kafue in the evening, replaced the usual game drives, a very welcome switch, and led us to our best African sunset views yet.
