Hwange NP, Zimbabwe


I’ve been in Zimbabwe since Monday, and have had no connectivity via either cellular or Wi-Fi. Obviously, it’s very hard to keep up a blog when you don’t have the ability to connect to the Internet. I don’t really know when the next time will be that I will be able to post anything.


I will post something now as I am again connected. I have some really good photos and videos that I hope to share. 


But Zimbabwe is a bit of a mess, a work in progress. Our camp was beautiful, and they took good care of us, but getting to it, and in and out of it, had its challenges. We were in a national park, but the roads are horrendous, as they apparently are in much of Zimbabwe. Because our drivers were stopping along the way every few moments for rocks and bumps, and crevices in the road, we were not able to cover as much territory in a game drive as we would have if the roads were in better shape. Plus, we all got tossed around in the back of the rig like socks in a dryer. 


We ended up with a total of four trips in and out of the park because of local visits to a village and a school, and coming and going. That was really interesting, but a long, bumpy drive. 


We saw a lot of elephants, but that’s the only animal that we have seen that’s larger than an impala. The heat here is virtually intolerable. That means that the animals spend their days trying to hide in cooler areas, such as the thick bush. So this has not been the most comfortable visit.


UPDATE


We are now in Zambia, so I’m posting this from our new camp at the confluence of the Lufupa River and the Kafue River. 


I’ll post more photos as I can.  The service is intermittent and very slow when it does work.

Only a couple of days left to finalize packing and then it's off to southern Africa. My flights will be on United from Phoenix to Newark (5 hours) then (another 16 hours) on to Johannesburg ("JoBerg" or "Jozi") and then the reverse route home but from Cape Town. I'm traveling with a group of 14 people from Overseas Adventure Travel , and OAT pretty much takes care of everything. No vaccinations were required for this trip, but malaria pills are recommended. Chobe NP, Botswana

We’ve arrived at Baobab (BOW-bob) Camp in Botswana as of Monday afternoon, so it’s our fourth country and another whole new world. Amazingly, we have some limited service here, so I hope to catch up with some of my other pages.  We flew back to Livingstone from Kafue this morning, then took about three hours to drive here, including going thru customs at the border.  Interestingly, that border crossing area is similar to the Four Corners area in the southwest. Only here, it’s four countries that all meet at the same spot: Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Although we are not scheduled to cross into Namibia, we can easily see it from our campsite, which is right on the border. My front porch overlooks the plains and Namibia. Kafue NP, Zambia

  Malachite Kingfisher We arrived here by small plane from Livingstone, Zambia, a flight of about ninety minutes after driving from Zimbabwe. What a great location at the confluence of two rivers! Lufupa Safari Camp is an oasis in the middle of nowhere. Though the game drives have had very limited success, the place is beautiful, and people here, as always, make you feel welcome and safe.  My tent/cabin overlooking the river   The main lounge/eating area.  But when we arrived back at camp last night from our evening game drive, there was a hippo waiting to meet us, right in the middle of everything. Because they can be very dangerous, we kept our distance, of course.  We had a very nice Sunday. Two boat rides, one on the Lufupa River in the morning, and a sunset “booze cruise” on the Kafue in the evening, replaced the usual game drives, a very welcome switch, and led us to our best African sunset views yet.
