Kafue NP, Zambia

Malachite Kingfisher

We arrived here by small plane from Livingstone, Zambia, a flight of about ninety minutes after driving from Zimbabwe. What a great location at the confluence of two rivers! Lufupa Safari Camp is an oasis in the middle of nowhere. Though the game drives have had very limited success, the place is beautiful, and people here, as always, make you feel welcome and safe.

But when we arrived back at camp last night from our evening game drive, there was a hippo waiting to meet us, right in the middle of everything. Because they can be very dangerous, we kept our distance, of course.

We had a very nice Sunday. Two boat rides, one on the Lufupa River in the morning, and a sunset “booze cruise” on the Kafue in the evening, replaced the usual game drives, a very welcome switch, and led us to our best African sunset views yet. Before calling it a night, our hosts treated us to a nice musical goodbye presentation with singing and dancing around the campfire.

Monday morning, we fly back to Livingstone, then travel by bus to the Botswana border, then finally on to our next camp.

Cheers,

Jay

Mopani Worms, a local delicacy. Yep, I did. Not bad. Crunchy!

Lotsa Hippos around here.

A nice pool in which to cool off.

We’re about to land at our dirt strip.

Hippos in the river are watching us.

This lizard, a Water Monitor, loves to eat crocodile eggs.

A beautiful end to a very nice day

SEE YOU IN BOTSWANA!!
